Summary : Dr. Barry presents the risk factors associated with BPH and prostate cancer and current ongoing studies. Risk factors associated with BPH include circulating androgen levels, growth factors, erectile dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, and diet and exercise. Risk factors associated with prostate cancer include smoking, alcohol, physical activity, medications, diet and nutritional supplements.
Dr. Barry acquaints us with the natural history of both BPH and prostate cancer and further examines genetic markers and susceptibility genes that are associated with these conditions. On behalf of the committee, Dr. Barry concludes by providing future research recommendations.
